Chapter History
The War Years and Beyond... (excerpt taken from
The Story of Kappa Alpha Psi)
"Irven Armstrong, a sergeant in the 351st Field Artillery
in France,
issued a call to the Kappamen overseas for a meeting in
LeMans, France.
Twenty-five responded, notwithstanding problems of
transportation and
the sea of mud in and about the convention village.
Although unofficial,
the call had piqued the imagination of Kappamen in
every theater of
operation.
Some forty years later, the little village with its neat and
ancient
houses, paved streets, and broad highways leading directly to
Paris, defied
recollection of the war-weary soldiers sloshing through rain
and mud to
give service to that "good old Kappa spirit." This gesture
of spiritual
revival at a time when young Fraternity was struggling for
continued
existence was a stroke of genius. It focused the attention
of members upon
the ideals of the organization when ideals, even ambitions,
were being
questioned.
Not withstanding the inexorable consequences of war, Kappa Alpha Psi
witnessed slow but continuous progress. On the 21st of April in the
war year of 1917 the Theta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi was chartered
at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Located in the
North Central Province, it was the fraternity's eighth great chapter
and the first in the Chicago area. The charter members were:
E. Wilbur Johnson
Ira M. Henderson
T.F. Charleston
Carlyle F. Stewart
Roy Young
Due to the meager number of students enrolled at the
university in the late 1950's and early 1960's, the Theta Chapter became
inactive for a period. It was rechartered in 1967 by Big Brother Davis,
a former student, coach and athlete at Northwestern University.
The history of the Theta Chapter is long and storied and continues to be
written in that good old Kappa Spirit in the name of Phi Nu Pi.
Recent History:
The Theta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was chartered on the
campus of Northwestern University on April 21st, 1917, with five undergraduate
charter members. On April 21st, 2007, the chapter will celebrate 90 years
of achievement at Northwestern and continuing Theta's distinction as being the
first Black Greek-letter organization on Northwestern's campus.
The chapter has a rich history at Northwestern University. In the 1960's
chapter members were instrumental in the "Black Power" movement at NU and were
instrumental in the takeover of the Bursar's Office, which led to the creation of the Department of
African-American Student Affairs and FMO.
