The Theta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has proven itself to be a pillar of not only the Northwestern University/Evanston community, but also a pillar of the greater Chicagoland area.

The Theta Chapter has a deep interest in helping young African-American men become respectable and productive members of the African-American community. Some programs that reflect these interests are:

Passages Charter School- Members of the Theta Chapter hold weekly tutoring sessions with pre-kindergarten through 5th grade students at a local school in the North Shore. Nupes read books with the children, serve snacks, help with homework assignments, play basketball, and provide general assistance in a range of areas. We also serve as facilitators in the Project S.O.A.R. mentoring program sponsored by the Evanston-McGaw YMCA.

Expanding our efforts into other areas of the city, the Theta Chapter can be seen investing in the future of our youth on both the south and west sides of Chicago. Every third Thursday chapter members take part in the Off The Street Club youth program established with the purpose of giving kids a safe place away from drugs and violence. We help children as they navigate through numerous, enjoyable activities from arts and crafts to baking (and yes Nupes can bake). On Chicago’s south side, Theta represents the only active undergraduate participant in the Nupe Hoops basketball league. This is a recreational league established with the purpose of increasing fellowship between brothers, but has evolved into an opportunity to contribute to various causes thanks to contributions from brothers.

With a strong commitment to achievement, and a concern for the overall success of the NU community after college, the Theta chapter regularly invites guest speakers to come to the campus and enlighten the community on post-graduate opportunities. Experts in various career fields come to the university and inform students of the possibilities within a chosen field, as well as offer advice on resumes, interviewing skills, and any other helpful information.

The Theta Chapter has also been devoted to helping those in need. We have been involved in numerous soup kitchens and food drive efforts in the Chicago and North Shore areas.

For this 2005-2006 school year, the Theta Chapter will continue to sponsor all our current mentoring and service events, but will venture into unchartered waters with other projects. We look forward to re-establishing our Kappa League program, where members of the Theta Chapter conduct weekly mentoring/tutoring sessions with young men that attend Evanston Township High School (ETHS). Chapter concern for the achievement of our youth is high, and we want our endeavors to continue to reflect this idea.

If you are interested in doing community service with the brothers of the Theta Chapter, as an individual or with your organization, feel free to contact us. We welcome your presence and contributions.
