iKare: The Kappa Alpha Psi Haiti Felief Initiative
iKare= International Kappa Action Relief Effort

On January 12, 2010 a 7.0-magnitude earthquake devastated thousands of people in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, when homes, schools, and other buildings collapsed.

On January 14, 2010 Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated created iKare (International Kappa Action Relief Effort) to benefit the victims of Haiti. The iKare Initiative is a unified fraternal approach to raising money so that Kappa Alpha Psi as an organization can help make a difference for the victims of the natural disaster. This nationally supported initiative commits itself to continuously raising money as time progresses. Thank you in advance for your support.

In support of this initiative brothers from Theta chapter have designed a wristband which symbolizes and supports unity with the people of Haiti and with those who care to supportive the relief efforts ongoing in the country.

Wristband Rationale:

o Half Red/Blue: Represents the two main colors on Haiti’s national Flag.

o White letters: The Red/Blue band paired with the White letters are symbolic for the American colors (for the Americans purchasing the bands) helping Haiti and the red/white pairing represents KAPsi’s assistance in this effort.

o “UNITY = STRENGTH”: Haiti’s national motto (as shown on their flag) is “L'Union Fait la Force” which translates to “In Union there is Strength”. The concept of these bands is uniting people together to raise money for Haiti. Our Unity = Strength slogan joins Haiti’s motto and the purpose wristbands.

o “iKare”: The word is an acronym for International Kappa Action Relief Effort, this name plays on the pop culture lowercase “i” in front of words and creates a statement that people can personalize to themselves to feel like they made a difference by donating. Someone saying “iKare about Haiti” is a powerful statement meaning they emotionally “care” about Haiti and also donated through our cause.

How you can help

Contact one of the Theta Nupes on campus about where you can pick up a wristband at $5 each. Rock your wristband so that others will join the effort. If you can't find one of the Nupes on campus you can contact the Nupes at terriblethetanupes@gmail.com about acquiring wristbands or about making a general donation to the effort.
